More about art & artisans

“Hand weaving has been centuries old tradition in the state of Assam. There are several weaving clusters in Assam. And Kamrup region is one the weaving clusters with rural households involved in weaving textiles for both personal and commercial purposes. The craft of hand weaving in Assam goes hand in hand with the production of silk making. The state is globally renowned for the cultivation of indigenous high-quality silk be it Muga, Eri etc. Sericulture and textile weaving using indigeous materials serves as a source of livelihood to many in Assam. Initially, textile weaving was primarly done by the women of the native land nowadays both men and women weave in Assam irrespective of caste and social classes. Textile weaving in Assam, reflects tradition and also shares a deep connection of nature with native people. Motifs inspired from nature, geometric patterns, human forms are mostly seen on handwoven traditional textiles in vivid colors. Despite modernization the traditional techniques, processes and motifs are very much the part of the states’ rich textile heritage. Also irrespective of the geographic and day-to-day challenges, artisans/ weavers make constant efforts to retain the perfect balance between tradition and transformation, trying to keep the traditional art form and cultural heritage alive through their craftsmanship. “
