More about art & artisans

Shibori from Japan is a manual resist tie-dye technique used on textiles in any shape that can stitched up. The craft was introduced to India, supposedly by noble laureate, Rabindranath Tagore in the 20th century. The craft is practiced in India, by artisanal communities based in Rajasthan, Delhi and Gujarat.

Nui shibori is using simple running stitch as a resist. Shibori involves 4 stages – designing, stitching, tightening and dyeing. Nui shibori dyeing involves dyeing a piece of fabric after tying, wrapping or stitching the fabric to prevent the dye from penetrating certain areas of the fabric. Upon the removal of the stitch, an intricate design is formed all over the fabric – be in the form of seamless geometric patterns, abstract patterns or motifs with mirrored placement etc.
