More about art & artisans

“Barmer Applique Work originated in the west and has been existing in India since the partition. Several artisanal communities relocated from Pakistan to India during partition in 1947 and 1971. Artisans who eventually chose to set their base at Barmer District of Rajasthan, started doing the applique craft which led to the birth of ‘Barmer Applique’. The Marwari community has been practicing this upbeat craft form to follow an economically viable lifestyle, to earn livelihood and also to pass on crafting techniques and knowledge to next generation.

Barmer Applique is a surface ornamentation technique and involves several steps from planning, to drawing design on fabric, to cutting fabric/ fabrics (applique and reverse applique techniques vary in this step), Pasting or securing the piece or pieces of applique and base fabric to give layered or super imposed appearance, stitching and finishing. Designs inspired by nature are artfully ornamented on the fabric and layered in either monochrome or contrasting combination on various varieties of cotton and silks. The applique work requires concentration and attention to detail which makes the crafting technique laborious and also time consuming. Further adding embellishments such as use of mirrors, cowries and vivid colored threads or fabrics adds vibrance to the creation while reflecting a raw yet rooted cultural heritage of Rajasthan. Barmer applique work can be seen under various categories from clothing to home furnishing and is loved for its upbeat aesthetics and crafting techniques across the globe”.
