Dabu is a mud resist hand block printing technique done using natural dyes. The art form originated in Rajasthan, India in 16th century and it is being practiced by Chippa Community since then.
The method of printing gets its name from the word ‘dabana’, meaning to press. Raw material used for dabu printing are mud paste (made up of kali mitti, chuna, gud and gond), wooden blocks, natural dyes and saw dust. The crackled effect and earthy colors are peculiar to dabu prints. The traditional motifs used are of – flowers, leaves, buds, geometrical designs, tendrils, trellis and figurative designs. Natural dyes are derived from minerals, plants and other organic sources. Dabu printing is meticulous and labor intensive process hence it is practiced by highly skilled artisans.
