More about art & artisans

Mulmul – Born in Dhaka, Bangladesh which was then part of undivided India. Mulmul was made some 100 years ago by the Bengali weavers. Under the Mughal rule, Dhaka became the capital of the worldwide muslin trade. It was so lightweight and delicate then, it was referred to as ‘Woven Wind’ or ‘Wonder Gossamer’. Muslin double gauze is also known as Mulmul.

Mulmul cotton is a plain weave fabric, it was a treasured Indian import to the territories of England and Scotland. Later, they started their own manufacturing. Their machine made fabrics were not able to compete the handwoven counterpart then the britishers tried to aggressively repress the production of mulmul weaving in India. Consequently, the production of mulmul fabric has experienced a decline for years.

Today, mulmul fabric is being extensively used in clothing – for kids and adults alike. Mulmul is a preferred choice for summers for its characteristic properties like – absorbency, feather light weight, extremely soft hand feel and slight sheer.
