“Gadwal saree weaving is a traditional craft from the town of Gadwal in Telangana state in India. During 20th century before India gained independence, Maharani Adi Lakshmi Devamma was the last feudal ruler and a reformist queen of the Gadwal Samsthanam, one of the three important Samsthanams of Telangana. She is often remembered for her role in helping to adjoin Hyderabad into India and for her significant contributions in the field of education, literature and arts. She donated large amount of her wealth for the cause of education and literature. The Maharani Adi Lakshmi Devamma (M.A.L.D) Government Arts and Science Degree College is located in the fort donated by the Maharani post India’s independence. She played a pivotal role by supporting arts, specially weaving by establishing weaving centers and by providing required resources and training to the local artisans – like improvising weaving techniques, introducing designs, also ensured the access to high-quality materials of pure cotton and silk which enhanced the quality of the Gadwal sarees. Maharani also actively promoted the Gadwal sarees in cultural circles and among royalties which elevated the status of the Gadwal Sarees and made them the symbol of cultural heritage and luxury.

The Gadwal sarees are known not only in India but worldwide, for its vibrant colors, zari work, high-quality materials and unique interlock weaving technique called Kuttu. In kuttu technique, weaver meticulously joins the separately woven saree body made in either pure cotton, cotton silk or pure silk with pure silk borders and pallu, the entire process is manual and natural gum is used to execute the technique. Authentic cotton Gadwal sarees are made with pure fine cotton saree body (either plain, striped, fine checks or with small zari buttas) and contrasting pure silk saree borders with intricate designs in gold color zari and saree pallu with ornate gold color zari weaving. The skilled weavers from the Padmashali community work on traditional looms to create these masterpieces implementing the exquisite weaving techniques and traditional designs which are passed down from one generation to another. It takes approximately a weeks’ time and effort of two weavers to complete one Gadwal saree including processes such as dyeing, drying, thread-making and weaving. Gadwal sarees have immense cultural significance in India and are worn for traditional events, festivals, weddings and celebrations since they are light-weight, comfortable making them suitable for all the seasons in India.
