The Heritage Kanchi Saree originates from the temple town of Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu. Artisans adapt motifs such as Mayil, Rudraksh, Yazhi, and Iruthalapakshi from the rich temple architecture of Kanchipuram, and therefore, these motifs appear on authentic Kanchi Cotton, Silk Cotton, and Silk sarees. In addition, authentic weaving patterns like Rettai Pettu, Zari-touched borders, Gopuram, Mobagam, Veldhari, and Kattam often enhance either the borders or the body of the saree. Furthermore, weavers design pallus to be grand, weaving elaborate motifs that narrate stories and showcase mythical elements across both Cottons and Silks.

Traditionally, artisans wove cotton fabrics in counts ranging from coarser 60s to finer 100s. Over time, however, the 80s count became the most widely used, especially with cotton and mercerized cotton yarns. Moreover, Kanchi cotton sarees appear in a wide range of colors. Sometimes, the palette reflects temple-inspired combinations; at other times, it draws from nature. Today, artisans also execute contemporary pastel shades with effortless finesse. Significantly, dual-tone weaving stands out as one of the classic and unique features of Kanchipuram cotton sarees.

Historically, the Padmasaliyar and Devanga communities of Tamil Nadu wove Kanchi sarees in Kanchipuram. Over generations, many families in Kanchipuram and the surrounding villages continued this craft, passing down their weaving skills from one generation to the next. Importantly, women usually manage pre-loom work, while men set up the looms and carry out the weaving. Depending on the fabric, weave, and design details, a single saree can take up to 20 days to complete. Ultimately, every Kanchi saree tells a story, yet the weave determines its essence.
