Khun fabric (also known as Khana) is a centuries-old textile tradition of the Deccan region, particularly flourishing in North Karnataka and parts of Maharashtra. Its origins are believed to trace back to around the 8th century, Chalukya Dynasty. For its traditional Khana handweaving techniques and unique identity, the town Guledgudda was awarded with GI Tag in 2016.

Traditionally handwoven Khun is characterized by small geometric and temple-inspired motifs, distinctive borders, and vibrant colours considered auspicious. Devanga, Padmashali, and other weaving communities work in tandem to preserve this North Karnataka identity. Over the time much of it is now woven on power looms using cotton and art silk threads, the design language, motifs, and cultural identity still remain rooted in tradition.

Khun holds religious significance as well. The fabric, folded in its traditional triangular form, is offered to deities in temples and during pujas, often along with the regional Ilkal saree. It has long been worn – and continues to be worn by women of North Karnataka and Maharashtra as a traditional pairing with the Ilkal saree, symbolizing cultural pride and auspiciousness.

Today, Khana is recognised as the quintessential traditional choli fabric, forming an integral part of the regional ensemble. From a symbol of regional pride to a fabric admired worldwide, Khana is now embracing a global presence while staying true to its heritage.
