More about art & artisans

Sanganeri hand block printing is one of the surface ornamentation technique practiced by Chhipa community of Rajasthan. Earlier hand block printing centers were in Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat and during the regime of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II the craft started forming its roots in Sanganer. The village was considered favourable for the craft due to abundance of soft water for washing, dyeing and availability of clay for the the sun bleaching of fabrics. Traditional design motifs used are flowers, fruits, plants, leaves, animals, geometrical patterns and human figures on white or off white base done as buta, butti, jaal or borders. Contemporary sanganeri prints also include colored bases. The hand block printing is done using outline block called as rekh and filler block called as datta made of either teak, sheesham or metal. And dyes used are either natural or chemical. Cotton was the preferred fabric back then but now variety of fabrics are ornamented with Sanganeri hand block prints.

Sanganeri hand block print was awarded with Geographical Indication Tag in 2009 – 2010.
