More about art & artisans
The 9-6 Series – Workwear Saree: are contemporary adaptation of Pure Cotton Kanchi Sarees in formal design patterns like Kattam (Checks), Varai (Vertical Stripes) etc.
The Kanchi weaves have originated from the temple town of Kanchipuram from Tamil Nadu. Motifs such as Mayil, Rudraksh, Yazhi, Yali, Annapakshi, Gandaberunda, Chakra, Mango etc. are adapted from the rich temple architecture of Kanchipuram and thus, can be seen on authentic Kanchi Cotton, Silk Cotton and Silk sarees. Other authentic weaving patterns like Chinna pettu, Periya Pettu, Rettai pettu, Half-fine borders or Zari touched borders, Gopuram, Mobagam, Varai Oosi, Veldhari, Kattam etc. can be widely seen either on the borders and/ or on the saree body. Pallus are grand and have elaborate designs that narrate stories and have mythical design elements from Cottons to Silks. Traditionally, the cotton fabric counts ranged from coarser to finer that is 60 to 100 counts. Today the 80 counts are widely used in weaving using cotton or mercerized cotton yarns. Kanchi cotton sarees can be seen in varied colors – palettes are either inspired from temple combinations, nature or also the contemporary adaptations in pastels are executed effortlessly. Iridescent weaving or dual tone weaving is a classic or one of the special features of Kanchipuram cotton sarees amongst the above.
Traditionally, the Padmasaliyar and Devanga communities of Tamil Nadu in Kanchipuram weaved the Kanchi sarees. Many families in Kanchipuram and surrounding villages have been weaving since centuries have also passed down the skills from generation to newer generation. The weaving process and roles such as pre-loom work is done by women usually and looms set up and weaving is done by men mostly. A single saree can take up to 20 days basis the fabric type, weave type and design detailing. Every Kanchi saree tells a story, but the weave matters. Look closely and choose wisely.
